NGĀ PUĀWAI O TE ONEROA-A-TŌHE WĀNANGA

Together we are Kaitiaki

In September 2023, Ngā Puāwai Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe, a three day wānanga will be held to ignite systems-change action and restore the mauri of Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe.

Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe, a place that holds deep cultural significance, is in dire need of rejuvenation. Years of human activities have taken a toll on its mauri, affecting the delicate balance of its ecosystem and causing the Toheroa shellfish, a taonga and indicator of beach health, to face severe challenges. The time for change is now, as our collective efforts have fallen short, and we cannot afford to continue with "business as usual" approaches.

Supported by the Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe Board this three-day wānanga aims to ignite systems-change action and restore the mauri of Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe. We will employ the "Future Search" method, which enables large and diverse groups to come together, validate a common mission, take ownership of their actions, and foster commitment to implementation.

This wānanga will gather participants from the entire system that relies on the ongoing health of Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe. Tangata whenua, rangatahi, local communities, wairua tapū, landowners and users, fisheries and aquaculture, agencies, tourism stakeholders, and knowledge holders encompassing both mātauranga (indigenous knowledge) and science will bring their voices to the table.

This wānanga aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Reinforcement of the Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe Beach management plan and Toheroa strategic plan, ensuring their effectiveness in restoring the beach's vitality.

  2. Formation of new relationships among diverse interests, establishing a solid foundation for collaborative action. Together, we can transcend barriers and find common ground to address the challenges facing Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe.

  3. Sharing of data and information, identifying knowledge gaps, and fostering a culture of collaboration and learning. By pooling our collective wisdom, we can develop comprehensive solutions grounded in evidence.

  4. Commitment to implementing innovative actions collectively. We will explore novel approaches, technologies, and practices to revitalise the beach system, ensuring a sustainable and prosperous future for Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe and restoring Toheroa in abundance.
